Intrusive volcanism in sedimentary basins offshore Norway (55Ma) and in South Africa (183Ma) caused the emission of large volumes of greenhouse gases, equivalent to several centuries of today’s anthropogenic emissions. The gases were transported to the atmosphere through pipe-like hydrothermal vent complexes connecting the contact metamorphic aureoles with the Earth’s surface. Image: courtesy VBPR
