En ny studie publisert i Nature Geoscience viser at sement faktisk tar opp halvparten så mye CO2 som blir frigjort i produksjonen.
«The production of cement is a major source of carbon dioxide, but new research suggests the material that makes up our concrete jungles also plays an important role in reabsorbing carbon emissions,» skriver ABC Science.
CO2 frigjøres som kjent fra kalkstein under sementproduksjonen. Nå viser en studie at aldrende sement absorberer CO2.
«In a paper published today in Nature Geoscience, a team of researchers calculated that the carbonation process has offset as much as 43 per cent of the emissions associated with cement production», skriver nettstedet.
«In total, we estimate that a cumulative amount of 4.5 GtC has been sequestered in carbonating cement materials from 1930 to 2013, offsetting 43% of the CO2 emissions from production of cement over the same period»
