Our readers have voted. Out of five nominated exploration technology projects, three will now be sent to the NCS Exploration conference in Oslo on September 13th, where they will present their innovative work and one will be awarded the Exploration Innovation Prize.

    The three finalists are:

Aker BP – Empowering in-house machine learning models for exploration

Aker BP has developed an innovative and game-changing way to close the gap between the development of machine learning models and their daily, efficient use by exploration and reservoir development specialists.

This is an excellent example of a digital front-runner that unlocks the true potential of digitalization through organizational and technological transformation.

Equinor – Machine Learning Assisted Real-Time Fluid Identification

Equinor has demonstrated that they can identify reservoir fluid content in real time during drilling by analyzing mud gases.

Using an internally developed machine learning model, Equinor’s reservoir-fluid-identification system compares a database of more than 4 000 reservoir samples against samples of mud gas collected in real-time. The output not only discriminates between water and hydrocarbon, but also hydrocarbon properties.

The new technology gives valuable reservoir insights, reduced costs, and improved drilling efficiency.

NPD – From pathology to geosciences: The evolution of Avatara-p

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate has digitized tens of thousands of palynological slides through the Avatara-p project. This has greatly improved the availability of essential microfossil data for the industry and academia, while also making it available for future machine learning analysis.

Central to the execution of Avatara-p was enabling knowledge transfer from other fields, mainly pathology. The project represents the world’s first public archive of digital palynological preparations that shed light on Norway’s geological, geographical, and environmental history.

Register for the NCS Exploration – Recent Advances in Exploration Technology conference in Oslo (Fornebu) to see the three finalists deliver their presentations.

Following the Exploration Innovation Prize session, the conference participants will be invited to vote for their favorite project, and the winner will be announced during the conference dinner on September 13th.

    See you at Fornebu!

The Exploration Innovation Prize is awarded to a license group, company, or team who during the last few years have given a courageous and innovative technological contribution in exploration for oil and gas on the Norwegian continental shelf.

The recipient has matured an exploration technology with high potential leading to increased G&G knowledge or future commercial oil & gas discoveries.
