The HP/HT gas prospect at the margin of the Viking Graben was the largest discovery of 2023. Are there more hydrocarbons to be found around Carmen?

Carmen was the largest discovery on the NCS in 2023. While the P50 resources were first pegged at 175 MMboe, the current official estimate is 100.

The discovery was made in an area that keeps on giving – Fram and North of Troll (FANTA). The 35/10-10A well was just the next success in a string of recent discoveries in the area, including Kveikje, Heisenberg, and Røver South.

While FANTA is generally dominated by oil, the Carmen resources predominantly consist of gas. This may be linked to Carmen being located further west, towards the margin of the Viking Graben. The Middle to Lower Jurassic reservoirs are likely fairly deeply buried, and operator Wellesley has labeled Carmen as an HP/HT prospect.

At the NCS Exploration – Recent Discoveries conference in Oslo in May, Wellesley will tell the story of how Carmen was discovered and give their take on the potential for additional resources in the area.

In the same session, Aker BP will share its story on the Laushornet prospect that was drilled in 2022. A 93-meter Cook reservoir was found, but no hydrocarbons were encountered.  What led to the drill decision, and what are the key learning points from this dry well? We are eager to find out!

The session will also include a presentation of the Ophelia and Hamlet discoveries, given by Vår Energi.

The preliminary program can be found on the conference website. The place is Oslo (Fornebu), and the dates are May 7. – 8. 2024.
