A digital trailblazer paves the way for others, creating a substantial impact and serving as a precursor to further digital innovation and value creation in the subsurface geoscience community.

At the Dig X Subsurface conference in Oslo this December, the Digital Trailblazer Award 2025 will honor such a pioneer.

We are thrilled to announce Anders Waldeland, Senior Research Scientist at the Norwegian Computing Centre, as a nominee.

Waldeland earned his PhD in Informatics from the University of Oslo in 2018, specializing in seismic image analysis. His pioneering application of deep learning to seismic interpretation began with salt classification in 2017 as part of his PhD.

His 2018 paper in The Leading Edge, Convolutional neural networks for automated seismic interpretation, cited over 250 times, sparked a new era in geoscience by automating complex seismic analysis.

Through company collaborations, Waldeland’s innovations in seismic horizon interpretation have accelerated workflows, enabling geoscientists to analyze vast datasets with greater speed and consistency, earning industry acclaim for improving efficiency.

His seismic foundation model for the Norwegian Continental Shelf, leveraging DISKOS data, promises rapid, interactive analysis, potentially reshaping exploration in Norway and beyond.

Waldeland’s work extends beyond subsurface science. By applying computer vision techniques in areas such as archaeology, avalanche detection, and environmental monitoring, his work supports cultural preservation, public safety, and infrastructure management, showing how digital tools developed for energy research can be adapted to benefit society at large.

Anders Waldeland’s intellectual rigor, collaborative approach, and humility shine through in his ability to tackle complex problems while fostering open dialogue. He is a visionary thinker whose innovative mindset and cross-disciplinary impact make him a worthy candidate for the Digital Trailblazer Award 2025.
