When evaluating the 23rd round acreage in the Barents Sea, the Russian company Rosneft – along with many others – discovered a large structural closure in Area A. It was rapidly assigned first priority (GEO 05/2016; “Forventer milliarder av fat”).
Using AVO analyses that highlighted structurally conformable anomalies within the Stø Formation, Rosneft concluded that the Realgrunnen target had a relatively high hydrocarbon potential with good probability of success.
For an improved understanding of the hydrocarbon potential, 3D CSEM data from EMGS were subsequently included in the evaluation.
A high-resistive feature was observed in the Triassic, and it was considered highly unlikely that it originated in the Jurassic sandstones. The most likely source of the resistor was interpreted as the Triassic, where Rosneft had not considered any targets.
According to Rosneft, the EM-negative result for the Realgrunnen section lowers the expectation of the reservoir resistivity, raising the chance of brine-filled reservoir, low-saturation of hydrocarbons or poor quality reservoir, and effectively decreasing chances of success for this target.
