According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the United States remained the largest producer of crude oil and gas in 2015, surpassing again Russia and Saudi Arabia; the US oil and gas production first surpassed Russia in 2012, and the United States has been the world’s top producer of gas since 2011 and the world’s top producer of oil since 2013.
The US hydrocarbon production has been rising rapidly since 2008, from less than 20 mboe/d to around 28 mboe/d in 2015, while those of Russia and Saudi Arabia have remained broadly stable over this period. US production was pulled by tight oil and shale gas production. In 2015, Russian oil production continued to increase but gas production declined due to poor economic conditions and a mild winter, which resulted in lower domestic demand for natural gas. Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas production continued to grow (+3% in 2015) but was outpaced by the United States, which produced more than twice the petroleum and natural gas hydrocarbons as Saudi Arabia produced in 2015.
