As the title of the session indicates, we are now diving into the very building blocks and core of our science – the ROCKS. Various perspectives on this topic will be presented by domain experts and innovative companies, everything from mineral analysis and thin section details to more large-scale prospect de-risking and exploration. At the core of all this exciting technology and methodology, we go back to the basics – rock knowledge.

To set the stage, Stratum Reservoir will do an introduction on how rocks have memory. From there we focus on core analysis and Epslog will present CoreDNA, a unique non-destructive solution that when set up with machine learning and automation and semi-automation, is a powerful tool.

How can you trust the AVO results that you use for de-risking your prospects unless you have accounted for the burial history of the rock and the sediment distribution (facies)? Dig Science is presenting a methodology on how to interpolate or extrapolate rock properties between or away from existing wells.

These presentations showcase important steeping stones to generate real time integrated relevant reservoir information relevant to large-scale prospect de-risking in exploration.

Heavy mineral analysis and associated techniques are underutilized tools in exploration for better understanding of reservoir sand distributions in basins from multiple hinterland sources. HM Research will share a multi-facet approach.

Heavy mineral data including stable mineral ratio counts, garnet geochemistry, tourmaline geochemistry and U-Pb detrital zircon spectra from the Norwegian Sea case study pinpointing sediment types from three different provenance areas, including the Greenland margin, mid-Norway and western Norway. Technology development of the Wellify software will share some light on element distributions in reservoir characterization (Pandion Energy).

We will end the session with CGG on the stage. They will showcase results from ongoing technology and digitalization efforts that enable objective and efficient characterization of rock thin sections.

We look forward to learning and sharing knowledge and hope to see you at The DNA of Rocks at the NCS Exploration 2023 conference in Oslo!
