A digital trailblazer paves the way for others, creating a substantial impact and serving as a precursor to further digital innovation and value creation in the subsurface geoscience community.
At the Dig X Subsurface conference in Oslo this December, the Digital Trailblazer Award 2025 will celebrate such a pioneer.
We are delighted to announce that Lukas Mosser, Advanced Data Scientist at Aker BP, is one of the nominees.
Mosser graduated with a PhD in Earth Science from the Imperial College London and has since worked as Head of Research and Development at Earth Science Analytics before joining Aker BP in 2022.
Lukas is considered a true frontrunner, a pioneer in applying AI techniques to the subsurface, as this was an integral part of his PhD long before “the rest of us” ever heard of generative AI and GPT.
Since joining Aker BP, Lukas has led the company-wide data science community and been integral in shaping the company’s AI strategy. Today, he manages the Generative AI Value Stream, overseeing a multi-million dollar development budget, leading a team of 5+ data scientists and developers, and providing C-level advisory on AI initiatives.
He is also the product owner for multiple production-grade generative AI applications used daily in subsurface operations and drives collaborative technical co-development with external partners.
Lukas’s list of honors is impressive for someone still early in his career, including: Best Paper Mathematical Geosciences 2020, John S. Archer Award for Research Excellence 2018, winning the SEG Machine Learning Contest 2017, and more recently, the Van Weelden Award 2024.
Colleagues describe him as a “doer” with a great deal of curiosity, combining cutting-edge technical expertise with a practical focus on creating real-world value. He is a leading voice in subsurface data science on LinkedIn and X (prev. Twitter), and actively shares knowledge through open-source code, datasets, and educational courses, inspiring the next generation of geoscientists and data scientists.
From a young age, Lukas’s curiosity has spanned both Earth and space: inspired by space exploration, he dreamed of building rockets while exploring the geological treasures beneath our feet. Today, he continues this fascination by tackling challenging subsurface problems with AI, computational methods, and algorithms – always focused on people and real-world impact.
Lukas Mosser is a worthy candidate for the Digital Trailblazer Award 2025 for his pioneering contributions to AI in geoscience, his leadership within the professional community, and his ability to turn ambitious ideas into practical solutions that accelerate discovery, insight, and value.
