In the Subsurface Storage Sites session at the NEXT conference in Bergen, we will explore alternative storage opportunities in the subsurface, mainly CO2 in basalt and produced hydrogen in sedimentary rocks.

We have a special session in store for you at the New Energy X Subsurface conference in Bergen: Subsurface Storage Sites. This session may inspire you to think outside the box.

Our two invited researchers will showcase alternative storage opportunities in the subsurface, starting with Sverre Planke, CEO at VBER. He will share some results from a multinational research project that investigates technologies for storing CO2 in marine basalt structures.

Such structures may enable storage options in areas where clastic aquifers are not present or feasible to use. There is also evidence that injecting CO2 in basalts may reduce the risk of leakage, as the gas, when dissolved in water, may convert into carbonate rapidly.

The hydrocarbon and CCS industries have proved that the subsurface can function as a safe, long-term storage for fluids and gases. Now, academia and companies are exploring how porous rock formations may be utilized to store produced hydrogen.

NORCE researcher Xiaodong Luo will share how they go about characterizing potential hydrogen storages to build numerical models.
